Tutor Award

Ana started her journey to becoming a tutor as a learner on a care course at Embark Learning where she now teaches. Her motivation to teach comes from her passion for working in care and hopes to inspire the next generation of carers.

“After completing my Level 1 Health and Social Care course I took up a role in care, working up to being a senior carer. Eager to develop further, I then enrolled on Embark’s Aspiring Trainer Programme.

“I now teach Health and Social Care Level 1 and Diploma Level 2 at Embark Learning, across group, 1-to-1, face-to-face and online classes, covering all areas of health and social care, including communication, first aid, and moving and handling.

“My learners come from a diverse range of backgrounds. For some learners it’s a total change of career. Most of my learners were previously unemployed, with no qualifications or work experience, and many have mental health conditions. The learners often have low confidence and have struggled with learning in the past. The first thing I do is make my learners believe that they can do it and I’m always keen to understand their goals and dreams. I use different approaches, so all learners feel included, and use BSL (British sign language) and Makaton in my teaching.

“I am enjoying continuing to learn myself. I am currently completing my Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement, shadow other trainers to learn new approaches and maintain a CPD schedule to improve my knowledge and confidence.”

Sarah Kenning, Delivery Manager at Embark Learning, said: “Ana has a special way of connecting with and encouraging learners from all ages, communities, genders and skills that they can work within the care sector and that the career path they have chosen is rewarding and full of opportunities. Ana is a truly inspirational tutor.”
